Somatic Integration Procession (SIP)

Somatic Integration Procession or SIP combine three different models of counseling – adaptive information processing(AIP), somatic, and attachment theory.

Adaptive Information Processing(AIP)

This  theory of psychology states that maladaptively stored memories of trauma or disturbing events prevents us from processing that information and future information that could be related to that disturbing event. EMDR also works with AIP. The past and unhealthily or healthily stored information dictates our present. How you process your past influences your current symptoms. This can help one to understand why they process or understand the world in the way they do.

Here is a podcast episode that explains AIP: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/adaptive-information-processing-ep-63/id1462605147?i=1000567699612

Somatic

This is a focus on the body and how emotional pain can be stored in the body in various places. For example, when thinking about being rejected by a loved one, many talk about feeling a “punch to the gut”. This could present as something small like a gentle twinge of pain, headache, or to the extreme of not being able to use a hand/arm with no medical/physical cause of the distress.

Attachment Theory

there are four main attachment styles: anxious, avoidant, secure and disorganized. Attachment styles can be different with each relationship we have with friends, parents, significant others, teachers etc.. Attachment wounds can be created throughout life based on if our needs are met or not. While these wounds can be caused by abuse, they can also be caused by other situations such as a chronically ill or unavailable loved one, or a betrayal in the relationship.

AIP, somatic and attachment theory come together to help us to understand the self.
