Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a top-down approach developed by Aaron Beck in the 1960s. CBT addresses unhealthful thinking patterns, learned behavioral patterns and learning of a better way to cope with symptoms and future difficult situations. In CBT, we learn how thoughts, behaviors and emotions impact each other and how thoughts can influence emotions and behaviors. In CBT, cognitive distortions or thinking errors will be explored such as maximizing, minimizing, jumping to conclusions, over generalization, personalization and others. CBT is an evidence-based approach that can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. CBT includes practice or homework between sessions to teach life long skills. In CBT one will learn about triggers, automatic though, emotions and how to identify them, responses vs. reactions and think agains or secondary thoughts.
